K9 Veterans Day is to honor the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs. K9 dogs have been around since 1942, when Dogs for Defense was founded to train dogs to be sentries for supply depots. This program was approved by the U.S. Army in March of 1942, and the U.S. Army K9 Corps officially was founded on March 13, 1942. This was the first time that dogs were officially part of the U.S. Armed forces.
K9 Veteran Day is important because they served to protect us. A few K9 heroes are Sgt. Stubby (the original war dog), Chips, who is the most decorated dog in World War II, Lex who retired to be with his fallen owners family, and Cairo who is the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid.
