Discussing The Pet Themed Holiday That Reminds Us About The Significance Of Anxiety In Dogs
The month of March is jam packed with pet themed and pet related holidays. This includes holidays like Pet Poison Prevention Month, National K9 Veterans Day, National Puppy Day, and more! However, one of the most impactful and our personal favorites is Dogs In Yellow Day on March 20th. This article will discuss everything you need to know about Dogs In Yellow Day including what the holiday is about, the importance of the holiday, and how you can get involved.
What is Dogs In Yellow Day?
Dogs In Yellow Day is a very special pet themed holiday. The main focus of this holiday is to raise awareness about dogs with anxiety. The human world can be a scary place for dogs and it’s easy for some dogs to feel uncomfortable, overwhelmed, or anxious in public places or around strangers. Because of this, dog owners will often dress their anxious dogs in yellow as an indicator to others to give the dog space. Dogs In Yellow Day embraces this practice and aims to remind/educate others about it.
History Behind The Holiday
This holiday was created by Sarah Jones, founder of My Anxious Dog. Sarah’s dog, Bella, was attacked by another dog as a puppy. As a result, Bella was both nervous and afraid around other dogs. So, Sarah began working on a way to alert others that her dog was anxious and to not approach her. She created her own leash, collar, and harness that were bright yellow with bold black writing that said “Do Not Touch” and “Anxious.”
Helping Anxious Dogs Everywhere
While her yellow leashes and harnesses were effective, Sarah wanted to do more than simply help her dog. She wanted to raise awareness about the significance of dogs wearing yellow. She began reaching out to her community through flyers, posters, and social media. Her awareness campaign quickly grew into a community, which then became an enterprise, which eventually led to the holiday Dogs In Yellow Day. Sarah Jones now owns and operates My Anxious Dog, an online store that sells yellow leashes, collars, and harnesses for anxious dogs.
Why Have A Holiday About Anxiety In Dogs?
Everyone experiences anxiety and our pets are no exception. While people have a better understanding of anxiety and social disorders, dogs do not. Dogs feel anxiety, but don’t fully understand it the way we do. Having a holiday that raises awareness about dog anxiety is important for a variety of reasons. It helps people have a better understanding of how dogs feel and react to their environment. It also reminds people to pay more attention regarding how and when they interact with dogs.
The Importance Of The Holiday
A simple scratch behind the ears may seem harmless to us, but it could be terrifying to an anxious dog. This holiday promotes the idea of empathy, something many of us don’t use often enough. We hope this holiday helps people learn to appreciate and respect a dog’s boundaries and comfort zone. Dogs have feelings too and we as pet lovers should respect what and why dogs feel the way they do.
