National Pet Parents Day was first founded in 2007 by Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI). VPI has since merged with Nationwide Insurance and they continue to offer pet insurance to this day. The inspiration behind this holiday came from the policyholders of VPI that considered their pets as family members. These were some of the first openly known pet parents that started the trend of being a pet parent and thus the birth of the holiday itself.
