Covering The Holiday That Celebrates The Bond Between Pet Owners And Their Furry Companions

Being a pet owner requires a great deal of love, care, and attention for your pets. This is why many pet owners consider themselves to be more of a pet parent rather than a pet owner. This happens so often, that an entire holiday was created around being a pet parent. National Pet Parents Day happens every year on the last Sunday of April. This year (2023) it will fall on April 30th. In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about this amazing holiday including the history, the meaning, and how you can celebrate.

The History Of The Holiday

National Pet Parents Day was first founded in 2007 by Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI). VPI has since merged with Nationwide Insurance and they continue to offer pet insurance to this day. The inspiration behind this holiday came from the policyholders of VPI that considered their pets as family members. These were some of the first openly known pet parents that started the trend of being a pet parent and thus the birth of the holiday itself.

What Is Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance is a commonly overlooked form of insurance that many pet owners can benefit from. This form of insurance helps pay, either partially or in total, for veterinary treatment of the insured person’s hurt or ill pet. This can be very helpful to any pet owner as it can save you from unexpected costs when your pet has an emergency. The Meaning Behind The Holiday

It is undeniable that there is a very special connection between parents and their children. However, the same can be said for pet owners and their pets. While parenthood is clearly a different type of relationship, since a child and parent share the same blood & kinship, they are similar in many ways. Caring for a pet can oftentimes feel like caring for a child. Pets need food, water, shelter, attention, and love.

Pet parents don’t simply care for their pets, they raise their pets. They teach their pets how to act, behave, and grow as individuals. It is very common to see the personality traits of a person embedded into the personality of their pets. This ultimately makes our pets more human than most people tend to think. Similar to children, our pet are a reflection of ourselves and the lessons we teach them along the way. Here at My Dog Walker & Pet Sitting, we believe pet parenthood is something truly worth celebrating.
