What Is Clear The Shelters Month?

As the name suggests, Clear The Shelters Month is a month-long campaign that aims to help find shelter animals a good home. This campaign takes place from August 1st to August 31st. This is a nationwide campaign in which animal shelters, animal hospitals, news stations, veterinarian clinics, and animal refuges all across the country come together to get shelter animals adopted. Many animal shelters are partially or fully waiving all adoption fees during the month of August in observance of Clear The Shelters Month.

How Did It Start?

According to People magazine, Clear The Shelters month was originally inspired in 2014 by a North Texas adoption event. NBC5/KXAS and Telemundo/KXTX hosted the event along with several local Texas animal shelters The event saw a record number of over 1,000 pets adopted in one day in North Texas! The following year, NBC Universal took the campaign national and pet lovers across the country have been celebrating it ever since.

Why It’s Important

This is a truly wonderful and selfless campaign because it gives shelter animals a chance at finding their forever home. While there are plenty of pet-themed holidays that center around shelter animal adoption, this campaign seems far more influential. So many good people from all around the country are coming together exchanging resources, information, contacts, and even shelter animals. Every year this campaign becomes bigger, more efficient, and more popular. This campaign doesn’t just advocate for change, it makes change happen.

Shelter Animal Facts

When it comes to shelter animals, the odds are stacked against them. According to the A.S.P.C.A. (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year. 3.1 million of which are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. The sad truth is that most animal shelters can’t keep these animals forever due to a lack of space, resources, and staff. Out of those 6.3 million animals, 920,000 of them will be euthanized (390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats).
