In Honor Of National Senior Pet Awareness Month

When people think of November, the first thing that comes to their mind is usually Thanksgiving. While Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, November also holds another very important holiday. The entire month of November is celebrated as National Senior Pet Awareness Month. In honor of this holiday, this article will discuss the many great reasons to adopt a senior pet.

Reasons To Adopt A Senior Pet

Most people can be very picky about adopting a pet and will often choose to adopt a puppy or kitten. However, there are plenty of reasons to adopt a senior pet too! Here are just a few examples of why you should adopt a senior pet.

Already Trained

Both puppies and kittens almost always need some kind of training growing up. This includes things like being housebroken, litter box training, and developing social skills with people and other animals. But, most senior dogs and cats have already been trained and don’t require further training. This makes senior pets the ideal choice for people who don’t have the time or inclination to train their new pet.

Adaptiveness

Oftentimes, a new pet will take days, weeks, or even months adjusting to their new surroundings. Senior pets however, are typically very good at adapting to a new home. They usually get along very well with other pets, people, and young children. This makes senior pets the ideal choice for families with other pets or young children.

Good Temperament

Typically, most senior pets have a calm temperament. This is especially true when compared to younger pets like puppies or kittens. While puppies and kittens are great, they have a lot of energy and need constant attention & playtime. This is not the case with senior pets. Most senior pets want to spend their days sleeping and cuddling on the couch with their owners. This makes senior pets the ideal choice for people who want a more calm & relaxed lifestyle.

Affectionate

Generally speaking, senior pets are exceptionally affectionate. This is because, in most cases, senior pets have had previous homes and had to say goodbye to those homes.

There are many different reasons why a senior pet ends up in a shelter. Whether they are displaced, lost, or abandoned, they miss having a place to call home.

Consequently, Most senior pets understand and appreciate the value of a good home and will express their love in return tenfold.

Why Adopting Senior Pets Is So Important

The sad truth is that senior pets are easily overlooked for adoption compared to the younger and cuter looking puppies and kittens. Many people believe that senior pets are too much work and responsibility. Adopt A Senior Pet Month aims to break this stigma that only young pets make good pets. The truth is that every pet, regardless of age, can be a good pet.

The A.S.P.C.A. reports that roughly 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year. These exceptionally high volumes of shelter animals make being chosen for adoption very difficult. This is especially true for senior pets. Senior pets may not look as appealing as a newborn puppy or kitten, but they are just as valuable and loving as any other pet.
