Covering Everything You Need To Know About Mutts And The Holiday That Honors Them

There are 200 different breeds of dogs recognized by the A.K.C. (American Kennel Club). However, this number fails to recognize all of the mixed-breeds of dogs in the world, A.K.A. mutts. Mutts make great dogs and they are just as loyal, adorable, and affectionate as any other breed. That’s why July 31st is known and celebrated for being National Mutt Day! This article will cover everything you need to know about National Mutt Day and what makes mutts such great dogs.

When To Celebrate

Everyday is a great day to celebrate mutts and all of dogkind. That being said, we get to officially celebrate the beauty of mutts twice a year. National Mutt Day is celebrated twice a year on both December 2nd and July 31st. Whether you’re a mutt owner or not, we encourage all pet lovers to celebrate this wonderful dog-themed holiday.

Colleen Paige, founder of National Mutt Day

The Founder

National Mutt Day was founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige. Colleen Paige is a celebrity pet & family lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate. She has founded many other pet themed holidays including National Pet Day, National Dog Day, and National Cat Day.

Why Have A Holiday About Mixed-Breed Dogs?

Like most pet themed holidays, there is always a deeper message behind the holiday itself. Colleen Paige, the founder, created this holiday as a means to raise awareness and promote the adoption of mixed-breed dogs. Mutts are sometimes overlooked at animal shelters compared to purebred breeds, making them more likely to not be adopted. National Mutt Day aims to remind people about the beauty, loyalty, and love mutts have to offer.

An Important Holiday

We invite you to celebrate National Mutt Day this year because there are so many mixed-breed dogs in shelters that desperately need a good home. According to the A.S.P.C.A. (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), 3.1 million dogs enter U.S. shelters every year. Out of those 3.1 million, 390,000 of them are euthanized every year. These numbers are both tragic and sad, but they can be changed. National Mutt Day aims to be that change by helping shelter dogs find a good home.

How To Celebrate

One of the best ways you can observe and celebrate National Mutt Day is by volunteering at your local animal shelter. Most animal shelters could always use the extra help and you get the opportunity to help some animals in need. Besides volunteering, you can also donate to your local animal shelter. Lastly, you can celebrate National Mutt Day by spreading the word about this wonderful holiday on social media. People can’t celebrate National Mutt Day if they don’t know about it!
