Today is a day to call attention to the importance of pet identification methods and raise awareness to pet owners the dangers of dognappers. A pooch reuniting with it’s family is the exception to the rule; as heartwarming as a reunion actually is. A study in the UK found that only one in five stolen dogs are reunited with its family. A study in the US shows that almost 2 million pets are stolen annually.
Tips to prevent Pet Theft:
- Don’t leave your pet outside unsupervised for extended periods of time
- Put a tag on its collar with his name and your contact information
- Microchip your pet
- GPS tracker collars can help locate your pet as well
- Raise the alarm: notify local police, vets, shelters and rescues in the area
- Put up flyers with a recent picture of your pet and “Missing”
